The Governance & Regulation of Nunavut Archaeology

Shared Governance

The Nunavut Agreement established a shared governance structure for Nunavut archaeology.  Representing Inuit interests, Inuit Heritage Trust (IHT) works alongside the Government of Nunavut's (GN) Department of Culture and Heritage (CH) to ensure the protection and preservation of Nunavut's archaeological sites.

The Regulation of Archaeology in Nunavut

Archaeology in Nunavut is protected through the following legislation & policy:

Nunavut's Archaeology Permit Process

You must apply for an archaeology permit to undertake archaeology or visit an archaeology site in Nunavut.

As of 2025, archaeology permit applications must be submitted directly to IHT as well as CH by January 31st.
